Good bye to everybody! see you, may be, next semester

This is a really fun and modern type design I found in http://eismann-sf.com/news/?cat=28. It is simple, but very eye catching, not only because of the colors, but also because of the combination of lines with the colored shapes. Although in my opinion this is a great design, in order to be more consistent the aperture of the "m" should be colored, as well.

For my 4th project, I am doing a birthday card design which will be for an open audience but not for kids. There won't be specific person to send it at, It can anyone.

Here I post a typographic birthday card example that I found in Internet to so a typographic example of what I want to do.

After trying to do a typeface last week, I was looking different typefaces on the web and make a type by pictures where every letter of the abc appears on the back of trucks, It is very interesting, innovative and clever.

It is great how the type express the feeling of what the ad is announcing. In this case the type has the rough feeling necessary to express the mad mood of the tooth. Also the placement and the diagonal direction enforce even more that mood. I really like this ad. It is very clean, clever and well executed.

I really like how this clean, elegant serif font is combining with this childish script and very colorful type to represent adults esthetics versus children´s.

I found this image in a http://bestphotoshoptutorials.net/2009/03/19/40-examples-of-beautiful-typography-in-advertising-design/. I really like how the type is designed or modified to match the rest of the design. It is very interesting how some serifs are now part of the pipes or just simple dots where connect with other lines. Everything is well connected, simple, and clean.

I found this image in The economist magazine. I like the simplicity of it, in color and in line. Also I like how the typography in it has a strong feeling in it. The hand that has a pencil is writing a sentence that appears with a script type which flows and has a good feeling whereas the type that appears with the hand that has the scalpel is more blocky and scary.
What I don't like is the headline type. I would like to see other sans serif that gives the sense of professional than this one.

Looking for new designs, i found this wordmark in International Design mazine, May 2009.
I like how the two "Gs"are combined with different types and forming this abstract wordmark that works very well. Also I like how the negative space re-active the type and goes all around it as an open form.

I like this ornamental type which I took from internet, http://ilovetypography.com/2008/03/02/sunday-type-newzald/. Although just the A is drawn, it has so much work that it is an art work by itself. The color and the incorporation of those fantastic animals or the face into the design increase the sense of old style and put some emphasis into it. Also, I like how the swashes are drawn with the leaves. Very elegant and creative A!

Looking through internet I found this illustrative type, which got my attention because of its flowing lines as if it was fire. It is not the most legible typography, but it is still readable and the purpose of this type is to stands out and get the attention easily in a dynamic way.

This is the first proof for the Type Poster

ITC Mendoza

This type was created by José Mendoza y Almeida in 1991. It is a serif typeface with old style characteristics. Its high x-height and its no contrast between thick and thin strokes, makes ITC Mendoza being a good, readable and legible font family, which enables the face to resist of low resolution output and less than ideal printing conditions. It is ideal for continuous text use, particularly in small point sizes. It can be used for books and other text settings, as well as display work requiring a typeface that is both lively and elegant. ITC Mendoza is available in six different weights, which make this font more versatile.

José Mendoza was born in 1926 in Sèvres, France. He is type designer, typographer, teacher. Trained as a photoengraver at the Cliché Union in Paris. Mendoza says of his work that he “always tries to mix rigor and sensitivity, and the feeling of a hand’s gesture to his designs.”Besides this typefamily, José Mendoza designed Pascal (1960), Photina® (1972), Fidelio (1980) and Sully Jonquières (1980).

I was in Internet and i found this poster which is very interesting and got my attention first because of its focal point, the boldness in the number 5 and because of the contrast. I like how the number afect the rest of the text because of its weight as if it was real weight. Also, i like how all the text is in the bottom creating an asymmetrical with the with the empty space of the top.

This is a poster for the movie "27 dresses" that i found in Internet. It is very interesting how type is used to complete the image of the dress, not only the title but also the rest of the movie information, and that the type chosen is script type that gives to the movie an informal atmosphere which is the purpose of the design.

ITC Tactile:

Joe Stitzlein created ITC Tactile in 2003. His objectives were to design an energetic and contemporary serif font as well as create a legible typeface that gets the attention of the readers in a nice “tactile” way, as the designer expressed. This type is easy to read at text sizes, but the details that make it stands out from the rest of traditional designs do not appear until the type size is increased. Elegance and stately is combined with a bold design that seems to appear cheerful. Moreover, the alphabet merges two different serif designs, which are created on purpose. “The transitional serif is an entry point for the eye into the letterform, and the long slab is an exit, leading to the next letter” as Stitzlein stated. He also designed the small caps to match the height of the lowercase x-height. ITC Tactile family is available in three weights besides the italic designs as well as a set of small caps for each of the roman designs.

Although ITC Tactile was his first commercial type design, Joe Stitzlein designed Monolein Slanted, as well. This American designer has a lot of experience creating typefaces for corporate branding such as Silicon Graphics or Sempra Energy. Also, he has worked for Apple Computer and the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics, among others.

After have done in class the portrait exercise with type i wanted to show other illustrations of portraits made by type. This two are great examples of what we can do with type. Using type as a tool to draw or as an expression mode.

The seign of this poster for play is very interesting. All the handwriting type is around the main point the fork with the U.S shape and that made they stand out. Also because the design is just in black make itself more dramatic besides that the fork direction is pointing out the title of the play.

Sunday, April 12, 2009

This images come from a TV commercial where four different types form part of the same image and they work well together. Mixing those types in different bright colors make the images have more energy and make the type stands out as the principal part of the design

Monday, April 6, 2009

What i really like of this design is the simplicity and cleanness of it. Also how the designer played with the size of the "C", the contrast and the C as part of a circle so that it seems the "C" is coming up giving to the design a lot of depth. It is very dynamic.

Like in the last post, this image stand out first because of the color and typography contrast. But when you read the sentence, it makes the design more understandable and clever.  I like how the words "go to the hell" are in that fashion font very organic and lyrical and flow around itself that make me feel that the hell is beautiful and as the following text says "you actually look forward to the trip"
Altough I´m not sure about the underline in the red text, I like how the ascendents and descendents interact with it. Also it is true that the underline make the sentence bolder and overall everything has a good balance.

Sunday, March 8, 2009

What make this image stands out, besides the color contrast and the close position of the characters, it is the meaning it has and how the lying "i" gives a funny visual meaning changing the color also. First, you see a bunch or letters together in the middle up part of the design, which is compensated with the empty red space of the bottom and the name of the author's phrase in the same side. Later you realized about the horizontal "i" and the when you read the sentence everything makes sense. It is a clever way to say don't matter if you are old because always will be better that being dead.
At first, it was a little difficult to read because of how close the characters are between each other, but that helps to stands the horizontal "i" out.

This image from Communication Art magazine (January/february 2008) caught my attention  because of the cleanliness in mixing the real image with the arabic type to complete the shape of the bird. Also because the bird and the letters are painted in black, the white laurel branch stands out to intensify the concept which you can know it by reading the text is on the right-bottom side.

Here we have an example of what else we can do with basic shapes like lines and circles to design a logo (los logos). Mixing circular lines and circles shapes, the designer made a very dynamic logo and playful with a  minimalist style without lose the readable. Also, I like how the last "o" is broken to follow the direction of the "g"

Monday, February 16, 2009

This image stands out because of the contrast it has but also because of the solid and heavy type it has. In some parts it is a little difficult to distinguish the background and the type, but it is very interesting how the negative space those characters usually have, we don´t see them in this type. That what make interesting this type versus others.

Saturday, February 7, 2009

This image got my attention because of the use of subtle color overall. It is interesting in the final design how it is mixed the 3d types with the 2d types written on the left part. Also the subtlety made by using white color, almost in the whole design, is broken by the red type on the left side, which gives emphasis to the composition and creates a great asymmetrical balance, as well .

Tuesday, February 3, 2009

I like that the type is implied, and we are still understanding which one it is. The text that is written vertically gives quite movement to the design. Also i like how the yellow circle helps to balance the entire composition

Sunday, January 25, 2009

It is very interesting how to make shapes or drawing just with type. In this case the type draws the shapes of  different cities like they are drawn in a map

Tuesday, January 20, 2009

I like how Lander Janssens, among different kind of typographies, create an abstract dynamism. It has a very good asymmetrical balance where the three lines of the bottom seem as if they were a tripod holding all the rest of types.

Tuesday, January 13, 2009

This is the personal logo Brian Delia use as a designer. It is very clean, dynamic and modern at the same time using 2 different fonts. In this version the color that has been chosen works very well because each color makes stand out the other one.
